The Washington Ballet

Description: The Washington Ballet returns to CityCenterDC for its annual Dance For All outdoor performance series, bringing professional ballet to the heart of downtown Washington. These free, open-air performances showcase highlights from the company’s 2025–2026 season in a welcoming, community-focused setting.

The program features excerpts from the romantic ballet Giselle, selections from acclaimed choreographer Justin Peck’s contemporary work The Times Are Racing, performances by students from The Washington School of Ballet, and new choreography created by Artistic Director Edwaard Liang and company dancer Andile Ndlovu.

Held in the open-air plaza at CityCenterDC, the performances provide an accessible introduction to ballet for families, visitors, and anyone curious about dance. No tickets are required—simply arrive early, find a seat, and enjoy world-class performances in a relaxed outdoor environment.

Why families love it
• Completely free professional ballet performances
• Shorter outdoor format can be easier for young children
• Opportunity to introduce kids to ballet without purchasing theater tickets
• Mix of classical and contemporary dance styles
• Convenient downtown location near restaurants and attractions
• Open-air setting allows flexibility for families with younger children

⚠️ Good to know
• Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis
• Arrive at least 30 minutes early for the best viewing spots
• Outdoor performances are weather dependent
• Nearby Metro stations include Gallery Place–Chinatown and Metro Center
• Standing-room viewing is often available even after seats fill up
• CityCenterDC offers dining, shopping, and open public spaces before and after the performances

Best For
Families, aspiring dancers, arts lovers, visitors to downtown DC, and anyone looking for a free cultural event during Memorial Day weekend. The casual outdoor setting can also be a comfortable introduction to performing arts for children who may find traditional theaters overwhelming.
