Smithsonian Institution

Description:
Known simply as “The Castle,” the Smithsonian Institution Building is the original and most iconic building of the Smithsonian. Completed in 1855, it was the very first Smithsonian structure and remains the symbolic heart of the entire museum system. Built from distinctive red Seneca sandstone in a dramatic Gothic Revival and Romanesque-inspired style, the Castle stands out among the National Mall’s monuments and museums.

Amidst its first major renovation in more than 50 years, the Castle is temporarily reopening from May 22 through September 7, 2026, as part of the Smithsonian’s Our Shared Future: 250 programming commemorating the nation’s 250th birthday. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to step inside the historic landmark during this limited reopening period. (si.edu)

Guests can explore exhibits about Smithsonian history, gather museum maps and planning information, browse the gift shop, and relax in the nearby Enid A. Haupt Garden. The Castle is also home to the crypt of James Smithson, the British scientist whose bequest founded the Smithsonian Institution.
